Algerian Military Plane Crash: 257 Dead

    April 11, 2018
    Boufarik, Algiers

A military plane carrying soldiers and their families crashed soon after takeoff in a farm field in northern Algeria on Wednesday, killing 257 people in what appeared to be the worst plane crash in the North African nation's history.

Algeria's Defence Ministry said those killed included 247 passengers and 10 crew members.
The cause of the crash was unclear, and an investigation has been opened, the ministry said.

Most of the victims were soldiers and their relatives, the ministry said, and the bodies were transported to the Algerian army's central hospital in the town of Ain Naadja for identification.

Local media reported that the plane crashed just after taking off. Emergency services converged on the area near the Boufarik military base after the crash. Footage from the scene showed thick black smoke rising from the field, as well as ambulances and Red Crescent vehicles arriving at the site.

The flight had just taken off from Boufarik, about 30 kilometres southwest of the capital Algiers, for a military base in Bechar in southwest Algeria.

The Soviet-designed Il-76 military transport plane crashed in an agricultural zone with no residents, Achour said. [Note: various reports of the plane having been a C-130 Hercules are incorrect]

The Il-76 model has been in production since 1970s and has an overall good safety record. It is widely used for both commercial freight and military transport. The Algerian military operates several of the planes.

Currently there are very few photos of the crash, mostly screen grabs, probably due to it having crashed so close to the air base and being quickly sealed off by the military.

    1. A Russian made Il-76, similar to the one that crashed.

    2. It appears that the large plane ended up on it's side.

Awesome find, @Giorgio32. I've been waiting for new material to hit the net.

What are the chances that someone in Algeria just happened to filming that plane when it took off?

Most of their planes are white but I had a suspicion that it was gray.

    Thanks for the post :).

And there's already been a number of them so far this year.

That sure was a steep climb on take-off, although not uncommon. The banking to the right is also normal but they don't seem to have the speed.

Once airborne they retracted the landing gear but seem to be losing lift. I also noticed that the plane's wing flaps and slats haven't been retracted and instead are still open.

The plane soon evens out...yet it is not climbing like it should have been: it stalled - either because of the open flaps, lost of lift and/or or because power to the engines had been reduced to soon.

With the sudden sharp turn to the left the plane is in full stall and doomed.

you were right @DeathHand , it was not the video of the Algerian plane, the photos of the plane crashed do not coincide in several aspects

No probs. But still it's a good video worth posting in another category.

    Thanks for the note :)
