Decades before Ronnie James Dio was the long-haired heavy metal pioneer, the iconic vocalist started his career as a doo-wop singer with his group Ronnie Dio and the Red Caps.
While you may be surprised how buttery and subdued his vocals are on 1961's "An Angel is Missing," Dio's versatility and range are on full display on this early recording and are a great precursor of what was to come. While the doo-wop style may greatly differ from his later heavy metal output, it's clear that he would become a dynamic vocal force in Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his solo group Dio.
What a voice... One of my favourite singers of all time.
