    Here, there and everywhere!
The flood of casualties from the battle of Somme, the Queen's Hospital, Sidcup, was developed as the first World War's major center for maxillo-facial and plastic surgery. Here are some examples:

I used to love this stuff. There's a TON more of these if you google Project Facade. I find it endlessly fascinating. The picture in the thumbnail (8th pic in this set) is a really tragic story. He was a young, good looking pilot who actually never even saw combat IIRC, he crashed in training and got burned like that. It was one of Gillies first cases and the guy ended up dying (probably for the best).
The 'tubed pedicle' technique looks like something out of a horror movie, but really innovative. I'm not really sure how it works. Does anyone care to explain? I saw one when the pedicle was attached from a guy's face to his wrist. How can you keep someone in that position for months to let the skin grow?

On a slightly cheerier note, I've added one of Gillies' great successes to show that his experimentation sometimes paid off. Pretty amazing work!

Anyone who thinks plastic surgery has come a long way just look at a recent pic of Lara Flynn Boyle. Woof!

That's amazing and shows that plastic surgery isn't only for the rich to look uglier afterwards. Yes, the first experiments looked creepy, but someone has to explore the possibilities.

The French referred to these unfortunate men as "The Faceless Ones". Pretty damned accurate and horrifying at the same time. Anyway, here's an article about the Tubular Pedicle technique, highlighting the work of Sir Harold Gillies - THE TUBED PEDICLE FLAP IN RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY: REPORT OF CASES

It's called a tube pedicle. It keeps the grafted tissues supplied with blood so they don't die during the process.
