Pompeii is a partially buried Roman city along with Herculaneum her sister city. Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius spanning 2 days in 79 A.D. The eruption buried the city under 4-6 meters of ash and pumice. It was lost for over 1500 years before it's accidental discovery in 1599. The people and building's we're covered in up to 12 different layer's of soil which was 25 meters deep. The people died an instant death as the heat was 250° C.

Those pictures of castings of the people are the real thing. They discovered people's forms and bones we're left so they injected the cavity the body left with cement and a fully formed body is what was left. Those are the exact position those poor people died in.
