Airshow disasters/crashes have long been a favorite topic for gore fans. This one probably ranks first among the favorites or most well known - even though it happened 29 years ago. The disaster was later eclipsed by the Sknyliv air show disaster in the Ukraine that occurred in 2002. Nearing the end of the Flugtag '88 airshow, the Italian aerobatics team, "Frecce Tricolori", took to the sky with 8 planes. The Frecce Tricolori were lining up to perform the "pierced heart" maneuver, 4 planes flew to the left and up, 3 planes flew to the right and up, and a solo pilot flew away from them the middle. The goal was that the 4 planes and the 3 planes would fly upwards in an arc, opposite each other and converge at the same point, narrowly passing each other, while the solo pilot would return and fly through them from a straight on angle. Ramstein, West Germany, August 28,1988. Set 1. 1. Undated photos of the Italian aerobatics team in flight. 2. 3. This is where the left and right group of planes converge, to be 'pierced' by the solo plane. 4. Lt. Col. Ivo Nutarelli, the solo pilot, Pony 10, poses infront of one of the team's planes.
