    Here, there and everywhere!
Scabies (from Latin: scabere, "to scratch"),known colloquially as the seven-year itch,is a contagious skin infection that occurs among humans and other animals. It is caused by a tiny and usually not directly visible parasite, the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows under the host's skin, causing intense allergic itching. The infection in animals (caused by different but related mite species) is called sarcoptic mange.

The disease may be transmitted from objects but is most often transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact, with a higher risk with prolonged contact. Initial infections require four to six weeks to become symptomatic. Reinfection, however, may manifest symptoms within as little as 24 hours. Because the symptoms are allergic, their delay in onset is often mirrored by a significant delay in relief after the parasites have been eradicated. Crusted scabies, formerly known as Norwegian scabies, is a more severe form of the infection often associated with immunosuppression.

I had scabies for probably a year, and the worst I got was mild redness. The itching was a nightmare, though. I had to take benadryl nightly for that whole time otherwise it was literally impossible to sleep. Itchiness is the most maddening symptom there is.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get scabies? And how did you get rid of em?

I used to spend my summers in Kansas with my grandparents and chiggers were a problem. They really like to attack your "sensitive areas."

It takes a while for them to die out, but the less you scratch the faster they die.

I was in the military at the time, but I always retroactively attributed it to this dirty slut I slept with around then. Anyway, there were pills (ivermectin) that solved it virtually overnight. It's weird to me because that's considered a secondary treatment. They mostly encourage you to wash your whole body with some kind of chemical shampoo. Oh, and wash every item of clothing and bedding in your life (Yeah, right!). Pills worked wonders for me.

I can't even look a second time without scratching. I had chicken pox when I was 21. It really is MUCH worse when you're older. My daughter had it at the same time and she was bouncing off walls and I was seeing huge rats because my fever was so high. To top it all off, it was the 4th of July so it was hot as hell already and just bad all around. The itch is what I remember the most. I took baths in oatmeal used calamine and after my parents rescued us, took benadryl to knock my ass out. I have the scars to prove I can't be trusted not to scratch. I would probably die before I stopped if I had scabies.
